There are things that are going horribly wrong with this world.
There are millions of people who are absolutely silent about it.
In the hollow space between the wrong and the silence - is where evil breeds.
It's heartening when celebrities, who hold a certain degree of influence on the general public, stand up and raise their voice on an issue that we all clearly know is wrong but our apathy stopped us from talking about it.
Leonardo DiCaprio, the Oscar-winning actor has stepped up to raise his voice to increase the awareness about the climate change crisis. DiCaprio is himself a vegan but he's not asking you to alter your habits drastically and become a saint. He's just highlighting that one small change in food habit can do a significant impact in the way climate change can be handled. Give up red meat; more importantly give up beef.
Likewise, the Chinese government has outlined a plan to reduce its citizens’ meat consumption by 50% - actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron are also advertising to encourage Chinese people to consume less animal flesh to help the environment.
The Titanic director, James Cameron hailed China's move to cut meat consumption in half as that "would not only have a huge impact on public health, but also showcase a massive leadership step towards drastically reducing carbon emissions and reach the goals set out in the Paris agreement."
As per global food report, per capita beef consumption has been rising in emerging economies including India, China and Brazil. Beef is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases, fresh water consumption and land use. One cow raised for beef destroys as much as 2 football fields of amazon forest!
Evil breeds, but it breeds faster when people epitomize habits of the ignorant which we know to be wrong. We all think its the fight between capitalists and purists but the truth is, it's much bigger than that. It's our home called Planet Earth that's at stake. And lest we forget, it's the only home that we have.
Beef should not be considered as the bone of contention in India. It is not about Hindutva any more. One of the world's biggest economy and the tallest actors are both urging people to give up red meat. For the sake of the environment.
The future of our planet indeed lies on what on people chose on their plates. Share this and inspire others to make this crucial decision as well.
